Easy as one, two, three (or ekam, dve, trini)

Over the last few months I have been learning to count. In Sanskrit. You're probably assuming that I have too much time on my hands. Actually the reason I'm doing it is the exact opposite. Ashtanga vinyasa yoga is a movement meditation. Focussing on the posture, the breath and the looking place starts to take your mind away from every day things. Adding in the count takes it further. Every asana (posture) has a number of breaths assigned to it which includes how you get in and out of it plus the state of the asana itself. Learning to count in your own practice is the only way to access the full meditational benefits of yoga. It enables you to be clear of all the busy goings on of life. For me it has really changed my practice and given me a much greater focus. Focus whilst doing yoga and focus elsewhere in my life. If you'd like to learn more about the count then please get in touch.
